New Regulations on Traffic Violation Penalties Under Government Decree No. 168/2024

Starting from January 1, 2025, Government Decree No. 168/2024 will officially come into force, introducing higher fines for numerous traffic violations. The sharp increase in penalty amounts has caused concern among many people. Acknowledging the legal significance and growing public attention to this matter, INLaw is pleased to provide the following article, summarizing some key provisions on penalties under Decree No. 168/2024.

From January 1, 2025, Decree No. 168/2024 dated December 27, 2024, which governs administrative penalties for violations of order and traffic safety in the road traffic sector, as well as point deduction and restoration for driver’s licenses, will officially take effect. The decree also increases fines for many traffic violations.

However, Decree No. 168/2024 does not fully replace Decree No. 100/2019. The penalties for traffic violations depend on whether the specific articles and clauses have been repealed or amended. If not, the provisions of Decree No. 100/2019 will still apply; if they have been repealed or amended, then the provisions of Decree No. 168/2024 will apply instead.
